When on a recent trip to Scotland, I was introduced to the story of Greyfriars Bobby, with which I was unfamiliar. I then read the original book by Eleanor Atkinson and totally fell in love with the "character" of Bobby. Internet research left me disappointed that so much was fiction, so I wanted the "real" story of this little dog. I don't love him any less for having read this book, and his story will always be a favorite.

Having loved the story of Greyfriar's Bobby since I was a little boy, I went to visit his grave in Edinburgh, when I was there at Christmas. It's lovely, and simple. I read the book on the plane back to the states, and the true story is so much more interesting. Here's a story that needs a movie remake.
This books sets to rights the things that were wrong with the American novel (which I also bought) Olde Jock, for example, wat a policeman, not a shepherd. He was on the force for 4 years. The books goes deep into the details of the kirkyard, and how things like the development of an electric clock, the Queen's wedding anniversary and so much else, relates to the history of the city and the story of this remarkable dog.
I got it in the Kirk in Edinburgh, but, if you order it, the true story is well worth reading, if for nothing else, than to compare with the unfortunate fasehoods that have been added to the story over the years.
Great book, but way overpriced. The book sells new in the U.K. for about $6, which I learned when I received it and saw the price printed on the rear cover. Not happy about that.
Loved everything!
I loved reading the true story of Bobby although as with any true story, it is a bit dry. It provided a fascinating , if brief, look into Victorian life in Scotland.
Since I'm on my way to Edinburgh for the first time (and I love dogs) I wanted to get a little history of the area. I can't wait to see the stomping grounds and the statue of that independent little dog. The book gives one a very good account of the history of Edinburgh during the time of "Bobby". It was good to read about the compassion and care the townspeople gave the little guy.
Short and sweet book. The REAL history of Bobby. But some of us were raised on the Disney version and prefer the fluffed-up story. I saw the statue of Bobby in Greyfriars Square while in Edinburgh -- dedicated by Queen Victoria. This little dog was tough, precious, and loyal beyond belief, and he made a huge impact in Great Britain. So this short history is good to know as background. But you'll get the real mixed up with the fictional... the book's mainly for adults, but kids will love any extra anecdotes you can relate to them.
We had a Scotty named Bobby, and bought the book because of the name. Good read, somewhat of a tear jerker.
