Beverly Kendall did a wonderful job on this book. The characters were well developed and draw you in as you read.

Missy has been in love with James since she met him when she was ten years old. Being one of her brother's best friends he, of course, did everything in his power to dissuade her interest. That is until he discovers he is in love with her as well, although he did not want to admit it even to himself. What we have at this point in the story is two characters who play this cat and mouse game with each other as they both embrace then deny what we as the reader see as the inevitable outcome for the two.

Ms. Kendall throws a couple plot twists into the story by having poor James seemingly irrevocably tied to the "Ice Maiden" Lady Victoria at one point when she names James as the father to her unborn baby and forces him into courting her. Even though she tries hard to show a brave face to James, you really feel Missy's heartbreak when the scene plays out where he rejects her after the explosive night of passion they shared. After resolution of the dilemma between James and Lady Victoria the plot twists once again with Missy's rejection of James once he finally comes about to offer for her. This is when the book really begins to heat up and comes to a very satisfying conclusion.

James is given two close friends in this book, Missy's brother Thomas and Alex Cartwright. Both characters add wonderful moments to this book. Each character is given a distinct personality that I think add a great deal of depth to this book.

Ms. Kendall also sets up the next title in the Elusive Lords series nicely within the telling of this story. I believe Thomas may be in for a rocky road in his book A Taste of Desire. We get a sneak peak at who his love interest is going to be when he is given a comeuppance by Lady Amelia at a ball. It's nice that his sister Missy gets to witness this "slap" to his face after what she has had to endure throughout her story. I'm looking forward to reading the next book, then the one after that as I'm sure Alex is going to be quite a surprise given his described personality. I'm definitely a fan of Ms. Kendall now.

I have never read a Beverley Kendall book before now and I have to say, it was worth it.
I thought it was the first in a series, but I'm not sure. I started out confused, because things were mentioned and not explained, which is why I feel there may be another book out there I do not know about - yet.
It did end well and picked up the pace half way through. By the time I reached the end, I was not ready for it to end.
I enjoyed the main characters. Full of passion - in more ways than one. I could write a essay and spoil everything, but I leave that to others.
It is a good book and worth the time. Enjoy.
Missy and James are a wonderful if maddening couple. I also loved that Thomas, Missy's brother and the heir to the title were best friends and he didn't want James to be her suitor.

I loved the devil may care attitude that Thomas his buddies enjoyed. But still thought it was okay for the other women of the ton were fair game but not his sister. Just like a man. Obviously, Thomas didn't understand the heart was engaged and he might as well have saved his breathe. In the end they were a wonderful, mad cap couple who tore up the pages of this story and set the ton on it's collective ear.

I loved the interaction and the almost marriage of James to Lady Victoria, who really almost ruined the couples hot steamy rush to the alter.

Millicent "Missy" Armstrong has been in love with her older brother Thomas's best friend James Rutherford, since she first say him when she was sixteen. James knows about Missy's "crush" and has still been warned away from Missy by Thomas. James is attracted to Missy but knows no good can come of it and so tries to dissuade her by staying away from her. What happens when James is told to not to stay away from her, and instead prove to her, that it's not him she's in love with? Both James and Missy are stubborn and sparks fly!

This book is hot! The chemistry between James and Missy is palpable and I was torn between wanting to knock their heads together or fanning myself! I liked how different their respective parents' marriages turned out to be. It just goes to show that not everything is the way it looks. I also loved the glimpses into the other family members. I am really looking forward to reading Thomas Armstrong's story and I can't wait to read about Alex and Charlotte!
Wow, I really enjoyed this one! Where do I start... Firstly, this is a story of "forbidden fruit" which always makes for an interesting plot, creating a lot of tension, passion, and conflict. Ms. Kendall tackled all this with gusto, creating characters and a story line that just flowed beautifully over the pages (err, clicks). There were a lot of plot twists and turns, but never once did I feel something was tossed in just to create conflict, nor did the story bog down with too much predictability. While not as light-hearted and frivolous as other romance novels in my cache, it was an easy, pleasant read, with well developed characters that you really did grow to care about over the course of the book - Missy matures, growing a woman's heart, while James battles with his lust, honor, and loyalty. Even the secondary characters were well-polished.

Suprisingly, I liked the fact that there was no real "bad guy" in this story. And while there was some closure with Lady Victoria's subplot, I was kinda waiting for James to give the reader a tad more in conversation with Missy, but that didn't happen. Its ok, I will live. )

All together, this excellent debut wraps up neatly with an epilogue (yay!) that gives us a few hints of what may be to come in Kendall's next book, and possibly the one after that. I'm hoping for an update on James and Missy in addition to Thomas's story in A Taste of a Desire coming out in January 2011.
