Georgiana Darcy Diary Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice continued Pride and Prejudice Chronicles Book 1 edition by Anna Elliott Laura Masselos Literature Fiction eBooks

Georgiana Darcy was mentioned several times in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice but we never got to know much about her other than she was a great piano player and she was very shy. This book gives us a deeper look into the young girl's life through her diary entries. When it begins, a year has passed since Darcy and Lizzie got married. The great hunt for a husband for Georgiana has begun with Lady Catherine at the helm. She is determined to get Georgiana engaged before she goes back to Rosings. Georgiana, however, is already in love...with someone she has known most of her life. The only problem is that she thinks he'll never see her like she sees him.

I felt like the author kept the characters true to their Pride and Prejudice selves. At least, no one acted so wildly out of character that they stuck out. The character of Georgiana went through a pretty big change in a short period of time. In the beginning of the book she was the shy, timid character we met before but by the end she was standing up to Lady Catherine herself. It felt a little fast to me, but not so fast that it was unbelievable.

The only thing that kept me from giving this four stars was that it dragged a little from time to time and the ending felt very incomplete to me. I kept hoping it wasn't really the end and there was an epilogue somewhere. This book really needed an epilogue to truly finish the story. As it was left, we assume we know what happened but we don't know for sure. I like to know for sure. :o)

Georgiana Darcy Diary Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice continued Pride and Prejudice Chronicles Book 1 edition by Anna Elliott Laura Masselos Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Following Jane Austen is an incredibly hard act. I liked the concept of this, but went in knowing nothing compares to the original.

For anyone familiar with Pride and Prejudice, Georgiana Darcy is a minor character in the original work. The younger sister of P&P's hero, Mr. Darcy, we're first introduced to her via a letter Darcy sends Lizzie. At fifteen, Georgiana was the subject of scandal and saved from folly by an accidental visit from her brother.

Elliot's work takes Georgiana Darcy from minor, but crucial character to the main one. Some of Austen's pivotal characters are featured in this work. It was nice to catch up with them.

The story opens with Georgiana Darcy on the marriage market thanks to her aunt, the austere Lady Catherine De Bourgh. The problem is Georgiana's heart is already taken and has been for a long, long time by her cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam.

There are fortune hunters and potential matches, misunderstandings, and reappearances of characters you never want to see again.

Georgiana grows from a shy young woman to someone who can stand up for herself and helps other people to find their own happiness.

I enjoyed this story, but I have to say that there was a presentist, 21st Century, feel to it, which took me out of Austen's time period and into this one. There were also plot holes and a lot of repetition - returning to information that had already been explicitly stated. Some of the characters' actions made me squint e.g. Caroline and Lady Catherine De Bourgh's. In the context of the time period, it just didn't make sense and as such, it hampered the enjoyment of this book.
All we learn about Georgiana Darcy in P&P is that she is shy, Mr. Darcy became her guardian when she was 11 following the death of their father, and Mr. Darcy rescued her from a potential elopement with the dishonorable Wickham. Other than that, she is a rather undeveloped character.

The author readily admits that in this novel, written in the form of a diary, she makes no attempt to imitate the language or style of Jane Austen. Nevertheless, she understands the characters from P&P very well, and adds a few of her own. Her characterization of haughty Aunt DeBourgh is superb, though she involves her in this novel in a setting that probably would not have occurred had it been written by Austen. Georgiana writes in her diary of the crotchety old aunt, that "anyone who makes other people as miserable as she does cannot be very happy herself."

Aunt DeBourgh is throwing suitors at Georgiana since she is now 18, an age she considers ripe for marriage. The problem is that G has been in love with Colonel Edward Fitzwilliam since she was six years old. He returns to Pemberley to convalesce after returning from France with a war wound, but she soon learns that he is engaged to marry another. Misunderstandings and miscommunications keep them apart, as in some of Austen's novels, and indeed usually happens in a modern rom-com.

G grows out of her shell quickly during the brief period of this novel, confronting the mean old aunt, dismissing some suitors, and sharing a secret with another potential suitor. Indeed, this secret is most improbable in that he confesses to her that he is "not of the marrying inclination" and she understands perfectly what he means! The word homosexual is never stated, but it is highly unlikely that a protected, virginal 18-year old girl would even know what that meant in 1814, nor would a man have openly stated his sexual preference. In my mind, that is the one major flaw in this novel, for which I deducted 1 star. She also visited Edward in his room, which would have been considered scandalous and verboten.

In spite of a few false notes, I really enjoyed the way in which Elliott built upon the characters that we all learned to love (or hate) in Pride and Prejudice and I look forward to reading more of her work.
