I was completely engrossed by this story. Between work, family, friends and other daily stuff I don't get as much time to read as when I was younger. But I gladly made time for this story. The three parts of the Spinward Fringe story included in this book remind me very much of watching StarTrek episodes. There are so many similarities to the TV shows that I was initially annoyed; the captain who rises to the top despite himself, captain gets the girl, engineer that implements mind-blowing tech on every other page, the wise and seasoned older doctor, the crew who come together like a close knit family, and of course our heroes always save the day surviving the most catastrophic disasters.
I kept reading and I'm glad I did. The characters develop over time and the story includes comedy, drama, intrigue and romance all in a well-paced action plot. There's even a gay character although his back story is not included here. The descriptions of space battles and tactics are clear enough that I could picture them in my mind. I found myself day dreaming about the possibilities and/or consequences that would come about based on several of the imaginary technological advancements described.
There are many threads and ties to other possible stories like how did corporations become evil (my guess is profit mongering just as in real life), what happened to the people on Concordia, what happened to Alice, what is captain Wheeler's backstory, history of the Triton, more history about Freeground Station, several others and of course the awesome cliff hanger!
All together this is a great story that reads easily and stays together fairly well. I happily recommend.

Spinward Fringe Broadcast 0 Origins A Collected Trilogy eBook Randolph Lalonde Reviews
A excellent start for this writer. Science fiction is creating at its best. The writer descriptions of the world's encountered and the space technology the writer creates in those worlds can be genius if done right. The characters this writer has created have some flaws as do people in real life. The leader of this group of space fairing men and women is Jonas who until he is drafted by the military on his space station, had only been sliding along doing a meaningless job. His boredom is relieved by starting a group of like minded people in a simulation training taking on the best of the best in military training to come out on top in flight situations. His group could beat the top recruits every time until the powers that be finally took interest and discovered the groups identity. The story begins.........
i enjoyed reading this. i wanted to say hat first off because the rest of wha i can think of to write will make me sound very aain it. for the good, battle descriptions were amazing and i never had that "well hes the main haracter so itll be fine," feeling. the bad; seemingly after every fight, hyperspace trip, stop on a planet, or space station the author decided to give you several pages worth of dialoge between department headsdescibing all he new tech and modifications done to the ship. while that was interesting at first, after about the third time it started getting tedious instead. the captain and crew also spent a bunch of time reminiscing, which seems like it would be good and make the story more engaging but it diddnt because they either talked about things that happened just recently in the book or things that were just generic tropes. i found myself starting to skip ahead a few lines at a time read a line to see if the scene changed then skipping some more. lastly and his seems minor but it did bug me more than it should, the first hal or so of the book they repetedly mentioned how well the crew was working together, and how well people were coordinating wih he res of the team, and the new members of the crew were integrating seemlessly. after the fourth time or so that level of efficiency would be the expectation, not the suprise.
In an era when most of the Galaxy is under the control of militarized, ruthless mega-corporations, one of the few remaining free societies is the remote Freeground Space Station. But events are threatening that independence.
When a group hacks into top-secret battle simulations and cleans the clock of the military's top trainees, Freeground brass recruit them for a secret "shadow ship" assignment to gather intel, new technologies and potential allies for the battles to come.
Author Lalonde describes Origins as "backstory, scene setters, the prequel I'll never have to write" for the Spinward Fringe Series (12 books so far). I haven't read the rest of the series, so i can't speak as to how it serves that function, but on its own Origins stands as an enjoyable, well written space opera.
The characters are likable enough and their interrelationships engaging enough that one is happy to cruise into battle with them. Lalonde wrote he wanted to create an experience that would "resemble that of watching a television show or movie." In that he succeeds.
There is a dark twist at the end (semi spoiler alert!) that leaves the fate of the main character unresolved, and this may disappoint some readers (maybe subsequent books in the series provide that resolution, maybe they don't), but I applaud Lalonde's willingness to take that bit of commercial risk. Recommended.
